This thesis explores the possibility of reusing the abandoned Oakley slate quarry to realise its potential and in so doing help to rejuvenate the post industrial town of Blaenau Ffestiniog.
As part of this study, we are proposing a sleep retreat within the disused site in order to raise awareness of this neglected environment and what will enable it to be converted into a prosperous and beautiful development. A unique set of site conditions that exist within this vast dramatic landscape creates the ideal environment for a tranquil and isolated facility.
This study will demonstrate the effect that light, space and the environment has on our natural sleep cycles and strengthen the case for designing a unique model for the optimum sleep sanctuary.
