Turning simple into special is a concept that is ever present in Turner Works’ approach – from repurposing space, structures and materials, to addressing sustainability and social engagement. Carl will present these ideas through a variety of projects, thoughts and stories.

Bio:

Carl is Founding Director of Turner Works, formerly Carl Turner Architects. A self-confessed “maker at heart”, his love of craft permeates his architectural design and often leads to innovative new uses for materials and processes.

Starting with his own Slip House in 2008, he has gone on to create projects both large and small for a variety of clients including The Design Council, The British Council, Lambeth and Southwark Councils, and most recently a 10,000sqm purpose-built education facility for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

Carl is directly involved in all aspects of the running of his studio and takes a hands-on approach to all of the projects that come into the office. In 2014 and 2015, He co-founded Pop Brixton and Peckham Levels, both social enterprise meanwhile projects in South London. 

In 2019 Turner Works was launched, a new venture that would see the practice involved in the imagining, designing, making and running of projects. Going beyond the traditional role of the architect, the studio acts as initiator, contractor and operator.

Carl lectures widely in the UK and overseas and is often asked to sit on jury and award panels. In addition to being a member of the Southwark Design Review Panel, Carl is also a Chair of RIBA London, and is a trustee of the Museum of Architecture. He was one of a handful of architects to be named in the Evening Standard Progress 1000: London’s Most Influential People 2017, and has won multiple awards including the NLA Meanwhile Award 2018, BD Small Project Architect of the Year Award 2017, Manser Medal 2013 and RIBA National Award 2013. Carl graduated from the Royal College of Art and was an inaugural Research Associate of the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre.
