In November 2024, during biofilm week, the National Biofilm Innovation Centre (NBIC) announced the winners of its annual #biofilmcreate competition. Open innovation hub members Jontana Allkja and Amy Foo Guest were awarded 1st and 2nd place prizes in the photography competition.

The first #BiofilmCreate competition was held in 2021 as part of the #BiofilmAware campaign, which works to raise awareness of NBIC and its research, and the many societal and economic impacts of biofilms. The competition has two categories: photography and art and is a great opportunity for members of the public, budding artists and photographers to explore biofilms in their everyday environments and is also a chance for scientists to look at creative ways of showcasing their cutting-edge research.
