Managing Risk and Vulnerability in Clinical Settings (HEAL462)

This module seeks to develop in-depth knowledge and skills in regard to the assessment of risk, the diagnosis and management of vulnerable groups in clinical settings. The module content has been designed to enable students to evaluate the theories of decision making to gain an understanding of common decision-making errors that could have catastrophic consequences in complex clinical environments and to critically evaluate their decisions in this context.

Part time delivery, with the module delivered in one semester. The module runs in semester one.

Who is the module for?

The module is designed for practising, registered healthcare professionals. The module is a standalone option and can be used to support continuous professional development.

Module details and indicative content

Learners will be expected to identify potential risks for vulnerable individuals in clinical settings and reflect on potential risk mitigation and management strategies.

They will critically evaluate theories of decision making and apply them to professional practice and the management of vulnerable patients within complex clinical environments.

Additionally, they will also be expected to critically reflect on the role of the multidisciplinary team in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients in complex clinical environments.

How you are assessed

There is one summative assessment:

  • A written case report.
