Clinical Skills and Diagnostics (Neurology) (HEAL435)

This module has been created to equip advanced practitioners with the in-depth knowledge and understanding to perform effective clinical examination of the neurological system and demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning to direct further patient management.

Who is the module for?

The module is designed for practising, registered healthcare professionals and can be taken as an optional module as part of a wider programme e.g., MSc Advanced Clinical Practice. The module can be used to support continuous professional development.

Module details and indicative content

Learners will be trained to develop the knowledge and understanding of neuroanatomy to explain neurological symptoms and critically evaluate the key elements of clinical history taking to inform clinical decision making.

You will  develop a variety of practical assessment techniques in order to facilitate a safe and effective objective examination and analyse assessment findings in order to direct patient treatment and management.

Additionally, learners will reflect critically on professional practice and the roles of other professionals, demonstrating awareness of strengths and areas for development.

How you are assessed

There are three summative assessments:

  • A 3000-word case study
  • A practical assessment: Completion of 10 observed clinical interactions
  • A 1500-word written reflection.

To support summative assessment, there are opportunities to undertake formative assessment.
