Diagnosis and Triage of Spinal Musculoskeletal Disorders (PHTY405)
The primary aim of this module is to equip professionals with the requisite knowledge to undertake effective differential diagnosis and patient management following clinical examination of spinal musculoskeletal conditions. The secondary aim is to develop the learners' ability to reflect critically on their professional development within a specific practice environment.

Who is the module for?
The module is designed for practising, registered healthcare professionals. The module can be used to support continuous professional development.
Module details and indicative content
You will critically evaluate the key elements of subjective and objective examination procedures for spinal musculoskeletal disorders using a clinical reasoning process.
Additionally, you will critique clinical decision-making using evidence based practice and analyse assessment findings including diagnostic tests to identify appropriate management pathways for musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal spinal disorders.
Learners will also assess findings from patient examinations and differential diagnoses in order to establish an effective patient-centred management strategy, as well as reflecting critically upon their own development with an emphasis on the identification of professional learning needs.
Lastly, you will demonstrate the ability to recognise the limitations of your own role and that of other disciplines within a practice setting.
How you are assessed
There are two summative assessments:
- A reflective commentary
- Submission of an assignment.
To support summative assessment, there are opportunities to undertake formative assessment.
