Neuro-Ophthalmic Advanced Clinical Practice (ORTH413)

This module allows for the development of an orthoptist's critical understanding of current and emerging strategies in the diagnosis, management, and holistic care of patients with neuro-ophthalmological conditions.

Who is the module for?

The module is designed for practising healthcare professionals. The module can be chosen as a standalone option, used to support continuous professional development, or be studied as part of an Advanced Clinical Practitioner programme.

Module details and indicative content

Learners will critically appraise the ophthalmic and medical investigation options employed in the investigation of neuro-ophthalmic disorders making appropriate selections using advanced clinical reasoning skills.

They will be expected to analyse the findings from neuro-ophthalmic and medical investigations to make an appropriate diagnosis using advanced clinical reasoning skills.

In addition, professionals will be given the tools to evaluate the clinical management of neuro-ophthalmological conditions applying evidence-based practice and patient centred decision-making processes.

Finally, learners will reflect critically upon own development with emphasis on the identification of professional learning needs, and demonstrate the ability to recognise the limitations of their role and that of other disciplines in the care of patients with neuro-ophthalmic conditions.

How you are assessed

There are three summative assessments:

  • A practical in the form of a clinical competency assessment
  • A 2000-word critical review linked to a self-chosen patient
  • A 2000-word clinical portfolio
