Advancing Ophthalmic Nursing Practice (HEAL 493)
This module has been created to prepare ophthalmic nurses to practise at a level consistent with level 1 competencies identified within the ophthalmic practitioner training programme. More specifically, the module will enable learners to perform clinical work to assist medical decision-making; participate in triage/screening and to monitor low risk patients with an established diagnosis to clearly defined protocols.
Module delivery
Part time delivery, with the module delivered in one semester. The module runs in semester two.
Key dates and application information
- Apply by: 29 November 2024 (for semester 2)
- Module start date: To be confirmed.
Who is the module for?
The module is designed for practising, registered healthcare professionals. The module can be used to support continuous professional development.
Module details and indicative content
This module will enable learners to accurately and competently perform a range of specified ophthalmic clinical examinations and record the results accordingly.
In addition, learners will evaluate the information from the clinical history-taking and clinical examination using a robust clinical reasoning and decision-making process to correctly direct the diagnosis and identify key aspects of patient management.
You will also assess the biopsychosocial and psycho-ophthalmology affecting patients with ophthalmic pathology and reflect critically on the roles of the interdisciplinary team members and the wider multi-disciplinary team to ensure interprofessional collaboration within the clinical setting.
Finally, learners will reflect on their own professional practice to monitor low risk patients with an established diagnosis to a clearly defined protocol and demonstrate awareness of self-limitations, and the ability to seek further advice as required to ensure safe practice and future development.
How you are assessed
There are four summative assessments:
- A 15-minute PowerPoint presentation reflecting on professional development
- Practical clinical competency assessment
- A 3,500-word case study
- A 1,200-word poster assessment.
To support summative assessment, there are opportunities to undertake formative assessment.
