Mental health and well-being
Never has there been a greater need to understand the needs of people with mental health problems and the range of professionals within the School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing enables us to adopt a valuable multi-professional perspective on mental health research.
In England, one in four people will experience a mental health problem each year. Poor mental health impacts on individuals and their families and is associated with high physical co-morbidity and increased mortality.
The economic burden of mental illness accounts for an estimated £150 billion per year. Our research reflects our expertise and interests in working with people with mental health problems and promoting well-being.
Across the life course impaired well-being and mental health problems can be both a cause and consequence of physical health problems and this synergistic relationship is of particular interest within the research theme.
Our research interests include investigations into mental health and well-being within student, healthcare and veteran populations, social prescribing in primary care, play, compassion and the impact of trauma across the life course.
