The School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a sum of money from the University's Research and Scholarship Fund.
The money will be used to support an exciting new project titled: Exploring the Past in Integrating Nursing History into a Modern Nursing Curriculum.
Led by Dr Carolyn Lees (one of the School's Senior Nursing Lecturers), the project will offer students a unique opportunity to engage with the rich history of nursing and consider its relevance to contemporary practice.
The funding will be used to facilitate a hands-on workshop that will enable Nursing students to explore oral histories, historical artefacts, and vintage photographs from the profession.
The interactive session will invite students from all levels of the undergraduate Nursing programme, as well as pre-registration nurses from the Mental Health Nursing and Adult Nursing programmes, to delve into these historical resources.
By examining these materials, students will be encouraged to reflect on how the past has shaped their current education and future careers in nursing.
Dr Lees, alongside Sian Wilks from the Special Collections and Archives at the Sydney Jones Library, has been working diligently to identify significant nursing-related items from the university’s extensive and unique heritage collections.
The university’s Digital Heritage Lab has played a pivotal role in making these historical moments accessible, allowing them to support both teaching and learning in meaningful ways.
The initiative will provide nursing students with an invaluable chance to not only learn about the history of their profession but also to consider how past practices, insights, and experiences can inform and influence their roles as modern healthcare professionals. It's a fantastic way to link the past with the future and encourage students to think critically about their professional journey.
The School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing is proud to support this project and looks forward to seeing how it inspires the next generation of nurses to reflect on their heritage as they move forward in their careers.
