Published on

Jignasa Mehta, our Professional Lead for Orthoptics, recently played a key role at the prestigious Emirates Society of Ophthalmology (ESO) conference in Abu Dhabi.

The event brought together global experts to discuss advancements in Ophthalmology, with Jignasa being asked to speak at inaugural Orthoptics session, underscoring the University of Liverpool’s continued influence in the field.

The ESO, founded by a group of dedicated UAE ophthalmologists, has earned a reputation for advancing ophthalmology practices and promoting global collaboration in research and professional development.

Zabila Khan, a dynamic orthoptist from Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, spearheaded the inclusion of Orthoptics at the conference. Through her efforts, Jignasa, along with other distinguished professionals, were invited to share knowledge on the latest clinical teaching advancements and practices in their field.

Her presentation, on the opening day of the event - during the ‘Eye-conic Cases in Ophthalmology’ session, focused on a fascinating and complex orthoptic healthcare case.

Jignasa said: “It was a tremendous honour to be invited to speak at such a prestigious event. Sharing my expertise, and learning from colleagues worldwide, is a valuable experience that reflects the global reach of the School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing's postgraduate programmes.”

The conference provided an exceptional opportunity for Jignasa and the School to connect with international leaders in the field as she was also invited to a round table meeting by ESO President, Sheikha Noura Al Qassimi. They discussed future collaborations and engaged in meaningful dialogue about education and research that will continue the advancement of the ophthalmic workforce in the UAE.

A key highlight of Jignasa’s participation was her discussion of the orthoptic postgraduate opportunities at the University of Liverpool which allow professionals to extend and advance their clinical practice in neuro-ophthalmology and special educational needs.

The School’s role in the advancement of the field of orthoptics was further evident at the conference with several members of our alumni playing significant roles.

Jignasa expressed her immense pride seeing fellow orthoptists that she taught at our School take centre-stage to help shape the future of ophthalmic care in the region.

"The event not only highlighted the achievements of orthoptists worldwide but also showcased the strength of our School’s commitment to excellence in education and practice," she said.

As the global ophthalmic community continues to evolve, the School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing remains at the forefront of shaping the future of orthoptics, providing our students with the skills, knowledge and experience to advance the profession globally.
