Our rankings and reputation

Setting our standards so high for over 140 years has given us a lot to be proud of in terms of our achievements, awards and rankings.

We are the original redbrick University. Founded in 1881, we have propelled ourselves to become a global University with internationally excellent research, gold-standard teaching, and fantastic graduate outcomes.

We are founding members of the Russell Group. Our dedication to providing excellent teaching and student experiences has earned us a Gold rating from the Teaching Excellence Framework. Attracting bold and original thinkers since the beginning, we are proud to be associated with 9 Nobel Laureates throughout our history.

This, plus so much more, is why we consistently rank in the top 200 universities globally. We are individual successes and collective triumphs. We’re thrilled with what we have achieved, and excited about what’s coming next. And all of this in one of the best cities in the world.

Our goals

At the University of Liverpool, performance is important. Our goal is to become a top-100 ranked university over the coming years as part of our strategy, Liverpool 2031.

Our rankings

Our drive to discover, innovate and inspire has earned us global recognition throughout our history. As one of the first civic universities, we are honoured to currently be ranked 160th in the world, and 19th best in the UK. Our pioneering research, exceptional teaching and vast global network are key parts of our success in our global rankings.

World University rankings

We’re proud to be moving up the world university league tables. Over the past 4 years, we have consistently improved across world league tables, and we are ranked the 49th best university in Europe. Our strong research, international outlook and teaching quality have contributed to this increase. And we aim to keep climbing.

Teaching

We’re proud to be rated Gold for educational excellence as part of the Teaching Excellence Framework. Our combination of a supportive, high-quality learning environment that nurtures student success, consistent delivery of engaging teaching and strong graduate outcomes has led to our success in this area. 

  • The Teaching Excellence Framework has awarded us Gold, the highest rank possible, recognising our excellence in student experience and outcomes
  • Achieving the Gold rating recognises the University of Liverpool among an elite group of 46 higher education providers in the UK.

Research

Trail-blazing from day one, our high-quality research and strong research partnerships set us apart. We are a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group, and always aim to be at the forefront of innovation and discovery. 

With an annual research income of £160.6 million and research collaborations that extend worldwide, we are harnessing our research power to address many of the challenges facing the world today.

The Queen’s Anniversary Prize

One of the highest national honours awarded in the UK for higher education, we are proud to have won this prize twice.
