Our campuses
Our campus is a big part of who we are. It’s where our students, staff and research colleagues come to live, work and study together and where our bold, original thinking happens every day. It’s here that we are able to make a difference to the world around us, and where we tackle the challenges society faces.
Our main campus is located in Liverpool city centre, where most of our academic activities take place. But we also have facilities elsewhere in the world.
Knowledge Centre campus
Our Knowledge Centre campus, also known as the city centre campus, is our main campus, located in Liverpool. It’s based in the Knowledge Centre, an area of development and innovation created through a partnership between Liverpool City Council and the University.
This campus remains an important part of what makes us what we are today. It’s home to our famous red brick building, which now hosts the Victoria Gallery & Museum, and has been an important place for discovery, learning and research ever since our founding back in 1881.
Today, as our main campus, this is where the majority of our teaching and research is done. The city centre campus is home to most of our teaching facilities and academic departments, as well as our shared research facilities. It also plays host to a range of other important facilities, including the Guild of Students, libraries and food and drink locations.
Our campus has many things to be proud of, but perhaps best of all is the fantastic mix of different styles and ages found throughout the campus architecture. From the Georgian buildings and park of Abercromby Square, through to the brutalist School of Science and Engineering and the ultra-modern School of Architecture extension, our campus architecture paints a picture of growth, advancement, learning and development throughout the last 150 years.
The Knowledge Quarter campus is home to more than 30 grade II listed buildings across its sprawling space and is split into three main zones which align, broadly, with our academic faculties.
- North campus – Located near to the Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and home to our Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
- Central campus – Situated near the Metropolitan Cathedral, and home to the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Guild of Students and many other facilities, including the Harold Cohen Library and various shops and cafes.
- South campus – Predominantly the home of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, this part of campus mixes the old and new to become one of the most stunning parts of our estate.
Leahurst campus
While the majority of our teaching and research takes place on our Knowledge Quarter campus, we also have a major campus located in rural Cheshire, where our veterinary students and services are located. The campus is located in Neston, Cheshire, just 12 miles south of Liverpool, meaning it’s well connected to our main city campus.
Leahurst campus is home to the School of Veterinary Science and hosts two referral hospitals, two first-opinion practices and two farms, all of which further the teaching and research capabilities of this wonderful rural campus. More than 350 members of staff, including over 100 veterinary surgeons, are located at Leahurst.
On site, Leahurst has common rooms, a lecture theatre and clinical skills laboratory. Along with having the facilities for teaching and learning, Leahurst is also home to a small animals hospital, diagnostic services and an equine practice.
The campus was first established in 1941, and has gone from strength to strength ever since, growing and developing to offer a fantastic place to learn and work.
XJTLU campus
Our third campus, a little further from Liverpool city centre, is our Xi’an Jiaotong–Liverpool University (XJTLU) campus, located in Suzhou Industrial Park. This campus was constructed following the formation of a partnership between the University and Xi’an Jiaotong University, which primarily allows students from both the UK and China to study overseas as part of their course.
The campus is split into two main areas, which were developed at different times following the formation of the partnership. Today, the north campus is home to the wonderful Central Building, which was nominated for the World Architecture Award shortly after its construction.
- North campus – Brimming with visually stunning buildings, the north campus is home to teaching, laboratory, research, and support facilities. It also plays host to the university's library and museums
- South campus – South XJTLU campus is home to academic teaching zones, exchange areas, places for research and a sports centre, all housed in a range of beautiful architecture.
