UG Students embark on an insightful economics trip to London’s Financial Centre

BSc Economics and BA Business Economics students from the University of Liverpool Management School recently embarked on an insightful two-day field trip to London’s financial centre, visiting historical sites and exciting landmarks in the forward-thinking world of finance.

On the 12th and 13th of March, students immersed themselves in the heart of the UK and Europe’s financial capital, a valuable experience which allowed them to better understand the city’s fascinating financial history as well as the thriving start-up scene in London’s very own Silicon Valley.

One of the highlights of the trip was the two-hour City Finance Walking Tour, which explored the origins of London’s financial centre through the eyes of an Insider London guide. During the tour, students learnt about the city’s ancient and unusual governance, which played a massive part in the birth of the world’s first Stock Exchange.

The tour included a visit to the area known as “The City”, a city within the capital city. Here, the students had a firsthand glimpse of the significant sites and key players in the world’s top global financial centre, including the London Stock Exchange, Guildhall, the Bank of England, Lloyds of London, Rothschilds’ and many more. The City Finance Walking Tour concluded outside the skyscraper of the world's oldest insurance broker, Willis.

Another high point of the trip was the eye-opening educational tour of the Silicon Roundabout which delved into the foundations, development and innovation of the business ecosystem.  Fast becoming the EU counterpart of California’s Silicon Valley, the Silicon Roundabout is also referred to as the “Tech City”.

During the tour, students enjoyed traversing the vibrant and quirky art-lined streets of colourful Shoreditch while exploring the curious origins and exciting developments pulsing within the creative neighbourhood.

The group collectively found the educational excursion positive and enriching, with one student commenting “I really enjoyed the London trip and I know my friends did too. Thanks for having it organised!”

Director of Studies for BA Business Economics Dr Yontem Sonmez, who organised the trip along with her colleagues Director of Studies for BSc Economics Dr Yigit Oezcelik and Dr Yuyi Li, said the “informative and engaging walking tours brought the city's rich economic history to life, showing students how economic concepts play out in the real world.”

An invaluable experience for the Economics and Business Economics students, this recent educational trip to London not only enhanced their knowledge of the wider financial world but also unlocked new perspectives and sparked inspiration among the young economists’ minds.
