Do:

Check out our helpful advice on updating your operating system and browser, Panopto, Zoom and upgrading to Office 365. If you need any help updating anything else on your devices, the IT Service Desk is here to help.

Don’t:

Keep software you’re not using. Not only does this use up valuable memory on your devices, but you’re likely to miss important updates on programmes or apps you’re never opening. Remember to close any accounts for software you no longer use, too. Not only will this safeguard your data against cyber threats, it will also reduce unwanted emails hitting your inbox.

Do:

Remember that software is built by people. While everything is tested before release, there are always bugs in software that are missed. Developers release updates to fix these bugs, enhance your experience and make other improvements available to you. If you don’t install these updates, you’re exposing yourself to security risks as well as not getting the best experience you could be from your software.

Don’t:

Forget to reboot your device regularly. Some software updates need a full shut down to be fully implemented so rebooting and switching off your devices regularly makes sure they install properly. Turning your devices off is also good for their batteries, as well as yours!

Do:

Enable and allow auto-updates to run on your devices. Updates can sometimes be released in emergency situations to keep you safe. It’s important not to block these and allow your devices to automatically install them as soon as possible.

Don’t:

Install apps onto your phone from outside of the official Google Play or App Stores. These could be scam apps which could be used to hack into your phone and use it remotely. Cyber criminals could use these methods to obtain your personal data for malicious use.

Do:

Remember IT Services will force through important updates to your University owned computer if we need to. You can make use of that Snooze button if you’re busy, but it’s important not to forget to then install the update at a convenient time. If you have a University owned mobile phone, it is your responsibility to keep its apps and operating system up to date.

Remember:

Software updates feature security patches, as well as new and improved features to enhance your experience, secure your account data, improve performance, and ensure your programmes remain compatible with the latest technology. Updates ensure your devices continue to perform at their best, while on campus and at home.

Stay up to date, stay vigilant, stay safe and secure.
